How to Cook with Gourmet Mushrooms
How to Cook Mushrooms
Mushrooms taste delicious in almost every meal, and are an excellent meat substitute! They have rich umami flavor, as well as an impressive list of health benefits. Mushrooms are high in protein, fat-free, cholesterol free, and gluten-free with low levels of sodium and calories.
We do not recommend consuming any of the gourmet mushroom varieties we grow raw or uncooked, although it is safe to do so.
We enjoy eating gourmet mushrooms with a wide variety of meals including pastas, stir-fry, soups and stews, egg scrambles, tacos, salads, and many more. Many of the mushrooms we offer also serve well as meat substitutes, be sure to check out our faux-meat recipes in the blog including mushroom scallops and pulled pork!
1) Cook the mushrooms alone first, do not overcrowd the pan.
Whether they’re whole, sliced or diced cook the mushrooms alone first. If you overcrowd the pan with other vegetables or pile mushrooms on top of each other they will steam rather than brown and crisp on the edges.
2) Use a dry sauté for fresh mushrooms
Cook the mushroom slices in a non-stick pan (or with a small amount of oil to prevent sticking) on medium-high heat. Dry saute the mushrooms, which will allow water to seep out and give the mushrooms a nice brown color. After about ~5-10 minutes once they start to brown a bit and the water is gone add a healthy amount of your favorite butter or olive oil and seasonings (we recommend lots of fresh garlic and thyme!). Cook mushrooms for another ~5-10 minutes, allowing them to brown on the edges. Enjoy!
